INTRODUCTION
It would be recalled that the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture was hosted by Nigeria between January and February, 1977. It would also be recalled that the desire to sustain and build on the gains of the Festival led to the establishment of the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC). It goes without disputation that FESTAC '77 has remained the greatest assemblage of Black and African peoples from all over the world. Similarly, CBAAC, an offshoot of the festival has grown into the foremost agency for the preservation, restoration and the promotion of African Cultural Heritage.
Therefore, thirty years after, it has become desirable to celebrate the hosting of the festival.
Aims and Objectives
(1) To critically evaluate the gains of FESTAC '77 and bring these to global attention.
(2) To re-enact, on a smaller scale some of the events, which took place at FESTAC '77.
(3) Serve as a forum for the assessment of the gains of CBAAC, and to chart a course for the years ahead.
To ensure a successful outing at the celebrations, plans are on to have an exhibition, cultural performances, dance drama and a public lecture. CBAAC has also engaged the services of a consultant, Proudly Nigerian for sponsorship drive and to ensure a resoundingly successful 30 th anniversary celebration. |
