INTRODUCTION
It would be recalled that February is a month set aside for the celebration of the Black History Month. An annual event which began in the United States of America (USA) in 1926 has since spread across the globe.
It is a time when Africans and peoples of African descent all over the world re-enact their experiences over time, their trials and triumphs, their struggles and ultimate victory over the forces of oppression, segregation, discrimination and of man's inhumanity to man. It is time for the projection of the best in the African personality. From ordinary events, the Black History Month has grown in scope and significance with the introduction of such events as lectures, talks, and debates to mark its celebration.
OBJECTIVES OF THE BLACK HISTORY MONTH
(a) Create periodic fora for the coming together of Africans and peoples of African descent in their different communities.
(b) Serve as a time for the reinvention of the African experience.
(c) Offers ample opportunities to evaluate the successes made by Africans in the preceeding year and map out strategies for the year ahead.
(d) Provides a time to highlight and bring to global attention the contributions of Africans to universal growth, development and civilization.
(e) It is a time to periodically showcase African cultures in its best traditions.
(f) The Black History Month in different parts of the globe helps Africans to synergise and explore grounds for mutual cooperation and assistance.
The Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) has since 2000 joined other Afrocentric agencies and institutions in the celebration of the Black History Month. CBAAC's celebrations always take the form of public lectures, cultural performances and exhibitions.
For 2007, CBAAC has drawn up a programme which includes cultural performances, and an exhibition titled, “ Africa : Her Indigenous Writings and Great Achievers”.
