1956 ( Paris ) Pan African Cultural Society of Writers & Artists meet to discuss a resurgence" of African Art and Culture

 

1959 Second meeting held in Rome , Agreed that there should be a grand world Festival displaying African Arts and Culture.

 

1966 Darkar, ( Senegal ) hosts the 1st World Black and African Festival of Arts & Culture. Nigeria is the star Country and asked to host next Festival scheduled for 1970

 

1967-1970 Biafran War (FESTAC) could not be held

 

1972 October 3rd to 6th 1st meeting held in Lagos amongst the International Festival Committee. At this meeting Festival title agreed to be known as: Second World Festival of Black Arts and Culture.

 

1973 March 26th to 31st 2nd Meeting held in Lagos amongst International Festival

Committee. Title of Festival amended to: Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture

 

1973 Dr Alioune Diop Darkar, appointed Secretary General of the Lagos festival

Scheduled for (1975)

1973 Activities and Obligations of International Festival Committee defined and guided by a signed agreement with the Federal Military Government, empowering the Committee to establish an International Secretariat.

 

1975 International Festival Committee and International Secretariat Members and

Functionaries Awarded Diplomatic Status by Decree 42 of 1975

 

1975 President Leopold Senghor of Senegal and The Then Military Head of State, Lt-General Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Patron and Grand Patron of the Festival respectively.

 

1975 Scheduled Festival, further postponed by t~e Nigerian Federal Military Government due to the lack of various facilities International Festival Committee ratified new scheduled date to: January 15'" to February 12'" 1977

 

1977 The Second World Black and African Festival of Arts an Culture took place in NIGERIA (FESTAC "77")

 

1979 Due to the Success of the Festival, The Centre for Black and African Arts and civilization was established by Decree 69 of 1979 (CBAAC) situated at the National Theatre Iganmu.

 

2007 Nigeria , headed by CBAAC Celebrates The 30 years Anniversary of FESTAC 77"
