CBAAC CELEBRATES 2008 BLACK HISTORY MONTH

In line with her mandate to preserve, promote and propagate Black and African cultural heritage, the Centre for Black and African Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) celebrated the 2008 edition of its Annual Black History Month. The theme for this year's event was “Repositioning Black and African Cultures for the Challenges of the 21 st Century” Thursday 21 st February, 2008.

BAAC's 2008 Black History Month celebration was a bumper package with a desire to reposition Black and African cultures for the challenges of the 21 st century. It featured among others addresses by a collection of erudite but articulate scholars, stakeholders within the culture sector and diplomats. The occasion prominently had Prof. J.F. Ade-Ajayi as Chairman, Prof. Tunde Babawale, CBAAC's Director/Chief Executive as host, Dr. Aliyu Idi Hong, the Honourable Minister of State for Tourism, Culture and National Orientation as Special Guest of Honour, and Mrs. Mary Lou Johnson Pizarro, a Public Affairs Officer from the US Consular General's office.

In addition to speeches, the event also featured cultural performances by both the National Troupe of Nigeria (who presented the Kolanut Dance) and Lagos State Arts Council (that performed Ijuba). The duo of Messrs. Windapo and Afeez Oyetoro treated the audience to a short drama sketch titled “Before, before and today, today”. Jimi Solanke, a highlife maestro, supplied musical renditions of evergreen tunes reflecting the theme and mood of the events.

The 2008 edition of CBAAC Black History Month was rounded off with the opening and inspection of art and culture exhibition by Dr. Idi Hong, the Honourable Minister of State for Tourism, Culture and National Orientation and other dignitaries.
